For Parents, Therapist, Educators and Other Professionals.  You are aware that a great amount of learning that occurs in the classroom and at home is dependant upon VISION.  Reading, writing, computer education, spelling and whiteboard demonstrations are part of most children's school day.  All of these learning situations require a child to use vision to process printed matter into meaningful information.

In your role, you stand in a unique position to observe your child/children as they are engaged in a variety of visual activites.  You may be the key to identifying possible vision problems, which is the first step in helping a child who suffers from inadequate visual skills.  Here are some signs/symptoms that a child may be at risk of having vision related learning difficulties.

  • holding a book very close to their face
  • turning head to use only one eye
  • covering or closing one eye while reading
  • squinting for either near or far vision tasks
  • moving their head rather than eyes while reading
  • omitting letters, words, or phrases
  • double or blurred vision
  • handwriting is difficult to read, crowded or inconsistant in size
  • excessive blinking ot watering eyes
  • losing their place while reading
  • using their finger/marker to keep their place while reading
  • headaches
  • writing uphill or downhill
  • reversing letters and/or numbers
  • rereads or skips words while reading
  • fatiques quickly
  • lip reading or whisper reading to reinforce comprehension
  • poor eye/hand coordination
  • poor reading and comprehension
  • inadequate ability to recall information
  • difficulty with spatial recognition such as left vs. right
  • unwillingness to participate in reading/writing activities
  • short attention span particularly when performing reading/writing tasks
